My name is Calum Hendrie and I am 20 years of age. I live in a town called Kirkintilloch near Glasgow in Scotland. I live at home with my parents and brother and sister.
I have loved football from an early age and started attending the summer ‘Goal Getters’ sessions at the age of 4. I joined a local team called Strathkelvin Thistle Colts at the age of 8 and over the next two years we took part in summer tournaments. The first one was held in Ayr, Scotland and teams from all over the UK took part. We reached the final, and after extra time and penalties we had to play till the Golden Goal was scored to decide the winning team. I was lucky enough to score this goal, and from that point on was ‘hooked’. The following year we travelled to Venlo in Holland where teams from Europe were competing, after many hard games we won that Tournament .
At the age of 11 I joined Clyde FC and enjoyed the regular training sessions and also being part of a professional club. During this time I made my mind up that I wanted to be a footballer and work towards this goal over the next few years. I remained there till I was 14 and at that point I was invited to join Hamilton Academicals FC. Once again I was attending for regular training sessions and games at weekends. The club asked me to join them on a full time basis at the age of 16, whilst still attending college on a day release basis. I also started getting involved in the Community Coaching Program at the club which I enjoyed very much. For the next three years I attended college, played with the club and also sat my various coaching badges. I finished season ’07 –’08 as top goal scorer for the under 19’s team scoring 15 goals.
In May ’08 I was invited to attend pre-season training with Motherwell FC , after a month I was asked to join the club. I learnt a lot whilst at this club, discipline, commitment, and attitude were all key objectives. I quickly secured a place in the starting line up and played most of the games all season, finishing as their top goal scorer for the under 19’s team with 17 goals scored. Season ’08 –‘09 I also finished in 2nd place in the Clydesdale Bank SPL under 19’s league. Unfortunately due to the economic climate many of the SPL clubs were not going to retain their Reserve league’s for next season and as such there was no further opportunity for me to stay at the club. This was a big disappointment for me as I had been working towards this from an early age; however I decided that I would be staying in the game in some capacity and would not give up on my dreams.
I now work for the Scottish Football Association as a coach, working mainly in the community in Leisure Centres and also Schools. I have gained all my badges and am now working towards my level 4 (professional clubs) I really enjoy coaching the kids and hope to give back some of what I have experienced and learned over the years. I also joined a local team last September ’09 called Kirkintilloch Rob Roy under 21’s.. To date I have scored 31 goals and am the club’s top goal scorer and we still have apporx 6 games left to play, due to all the cancellations during the months of November thru January because of the bad weather.
I am now a contender for top goal scorer in the West of Scotland League for under 21’s. I am very pleased that I have reached this ‘milestone’ and hope to continue to add to my total till the end of the season.
I give 100% in all that I do and still remain focussed on my career goals; I am a very confident and strong character who very much enjoys playing football and coaching.
